A vintage Volkswagen Squareback station wagon was partially damaged by fire Monday afternoon in front of Pau’s Asian Kitchen in the Island Village Shopping Center.
No one was hurt in the mishap, which occurred just after 3 p.m. July 23 as the center’s parking lot was filled with afternoon shoppers.
Firefighters from the Bainbridge Island Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire, which appeared to have started in the rear of the vehicle. (Engines of Volkswagen Squareback station wagons, also called Volkswagen Type 3, were positioned in the rear of the vehicle. The vehicles were made between 1961 and 1973.)
Part of the parking lot was closed to traffic while the fire was being extinguished.
The fire department response, and the large cloud of smoke caused by the fire, drew a large crowd of onlookers.
