Unwrapping presents at Christmas time can lead to a lot of garbage.

Kitsap County wants to remind folks what they need to throw away and what can be recycled to minimize waste.

Done wrong, the recycling system can be contaminated.

• Things to recycle: Cardboard and plain gift boxes. Gift wrap and bags (colors are OK). Cards and envelopes.

• Things for garbage: Paper plates and cups. Paper towels and napkins. Tissue paper. Glittery wrapping paper. Greeting cards with foil, glitter or batteries.

Bows and ribbons also are trash. The county suggests repurposing newspapers and brown grocery bags as wrapping because they can be recycled.

On Christmas Eve, the recycling facilities will close at 2 p.m. They are closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Household Hazardous Waste facility is closed Dec. 24-Jan. 1 for maintenance. Scrap metal containers can have unexpected closures. Don’t leave your scrap metal there; take it to a private recycler and get some Christmas cash, a county news release says.

The county says it is not holding a styrofoam collection event during the holidays this year because of labor shortages. Bag styrofoam and put it in the trash, the county says.
