BHS avenges loss to NK

What a difference a week makes.

After losing to North Kitsap 8-4 for its only loss of the season, the Bainbridge High School baseball team avenged that defeat with an 8-0 win Tuesday night at home.

The Spartans took advantage of errors by each of the Viking outfielders to score five unearned runs, and standout BHS pitcher J.R. Ritchie threw five innings, striking out 10, walking none and giving up four hits.

Ritchie struck out the side in the first inning, and the Spartans got the only run they needed in the bottom of that inning when Ritchie doubled to right-centerfield and scored on Zach Duffy’s triple down the rightfield line.

Viking Colton Bower singled to rightfield to start the second inning, but was stranded after Ritchie struck out two more and a groundout.

Bainbridge scored three runs in the bottom of the second to essentially put the game away at 4-0.

After a groundout, a single, an error on the leftfielder, a passed ball and an error at third loaded the bases. After a pop-up, Ritchie hit a ball deep to centerfield. But it was dropped for an error, allowing three runs to score.

Ritchie struck out two more in the third, and Viking pitcher lefty Dalton Brockett set down the home team in order for the first time in the game, including his first strikeout.

Ritchie fanned two more in the fourth, but allowed an infield single by Jaxson Gore for the Vikings’ second hit of the contest.

In the bottom of that inning. CoCo Black led off with a single. After a strikeout, Breckin Hadley smacked an RBI double to rightfield. After a flyout, a hit batter and a fielder’s choice the bases were loaded again. And again the Vikings made an error on a fly ball, this time to right, that allowed two more runs to score.

NK almost scored off Ritchie in the top of the fifth. After a strikeout, an infield hit and a fielder’s choice out, Ethan Gillespie hit a shot to rightfield. However the defense was in position to hold the Viking runner at third. A sharp groundout to second ended the threat.

Alex Elton came in to pitch for NK. After a strikeout and pop-up to short center Hadley hit another single to center. But Viking catcher Bower easily threw out the Spartan pinch runner trying to steal second.

Luke Lavigne came in to pitch for BHS. He did not allow a hit in the final two innings, striking out two.

With Zach Edwards on the mound for NK in the bottom of the sixth, he struck out two, walked one and gave up a single to right by Joey Hildebrandt.

Spartan second baseman Joey Hildebrandt makes a diving play but wasn’t able to throw out the NK runner from that position, resulting in an infield hit.
