Austin Hurt’s goal was to make the cut at the PGA Championships recently in Oklahoma.
He didn’t do that, shooting a 78 on the first day and an 81 on the second for a total of 159, beating just two other players.
It was Hurt’s first PGA event, after trying to make it several times over the years. The cut was at 144, so he was 15 strokes off, and 25 behind the leaders.
Hurt shouldn’t feel to badly about it. Also missing the cut were such well-known players as Dustin Johnson, who shot 146; Sergio Garcia, who had a 147; and John Daly, who shot a 148.
Justin Thomas won $2.7 million with an overall 275. He shot 134 over the first two days. A 298 earned $23,700, the last one to earn money in the tourney.
The former Washington State University star is now the club pro at the private Wing Point Golf and Country Club on Bainbridge Island. He was one of 20 club pros nationwide to qualify for this tourney.
On his scorecard, he birdied two holes and bogied three on the front nine of his first round. He bogied two more in the final nine, but also scored a 5 on a par 3 and a 7 on a par 4.
On Day 2, he had three bogeys on the front nine, including on two holes he had birdied the previous day. He also had a double bogey on Hole 9. On the back nine, he had bogeys on six of the nine holes.
Boys gymnastics
The Bainbridge Island Boys Gymnastics Club season ended with four gymnasts competing at Regionals and two advancing to the Western Nationals.
Jacob Hall, Liam Ruddick, Lafe Weighall and Isaac Werner competed against athletes from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Alaska at Regionals in Pocatello, ID.
Hall, a senior, earned sixth in the all-around. He scored 11.95 on parallel bars to climb to the top of the podium and take the gold. His pommel horse routine scored a 9.35, which brought him a silver.
Werner was in the Level 7, 15+session and placed third on high bar and seventh on parallel bars, on his way to placing 14th in the all-around.
Hall’s and Werner’s showings qualified them to compete at the Western Nationals in Reno.
Werner took 27th in the all-around.
Hall finished fourth on the pommel horse and 12th overall for the Level 9 group.
Back at Regionals, in the Level 41, 11-year-old session, Ruddick finished 10th in the all-around. His top events were parallel bars, where he scored 8.7 for a seventh-place finish, and ninth place with a floor routine that earned him a 9.3.
Weighall competed in the Level 41, 13+-year-old session, finishing 13th in the all-around. He took seventh on the high bar with a score of 8.5 and 12th on the floor with an 8.6.
