Bainbridge Dance Center will present its 34th Annual Student Performances in six upcoming shows, featuring more than 130 students, ages 4 through 18, at Bainbridge Performing Arts.
The dance center is a classical school focused on developing dancers who are committed students and skilled artists.
The studio offers classes in creative movement, ballet, modern, jazz and tap. Over the course of study these students gain great facility and foster a love of the arts which will stay with them through life.
Eleven seniors, many of whom have danced since they were one of the troupe’s tiny dancers, will be featured in all four of the above techniques.
The Advanced Ballet Repertory will present “Giselle Suite,” a 30-minute reinvention based on the original choreography of Marius Petipa. From the joy and festivities in Scene I to the mysterious beauty of the Wilis in Scene II, this condensed ballet has something for everyone.
A second historically significant staging, which will be performed in all six shows, is that of the “Shim Sham Shimmy,” a classic tap dance melded by the likes of old time tappers Leon James and Dean Collins.
In the 1920s and ‘30s, tap performances often ended the evening performance with everyone in the room joining in on the dance. With this community feel in mind, 24 tappers from four levels will join together for a sharing of dance history.
Performances will be held at BPA at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 through Saturday, June 27 and also at 2 p.m. June 27. Tickets may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206-842-8569 or in person at the BPA Box Office, open 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance – pending availability.
Bainbridge Dance Center has been in continuous operation since its opening season in 1981 and has grown into a program offering dance professionals the opportunity to teach, and dancers the opportunity to access at a high level of technical training.
