The Bainbridge Spartans swept the Bremerton Knights 3-0 in volleyball at home Sept. 20 thanks to their powerful attacks down the middle.

Middle blockers Jameson Payne and Holly McFadden had a field day against the smaller Knights squad, scoring several points in each set. Setter Emma Adcock helped set up the offense with accurate passing.

In the first set, Bremerton took a 5-3 lead, and Bainbridge failed to capitalize on the Knight errors and lack of offensive production, struggling to grab a lead until the end of the set.

But the Spartans finally did go on a run, outscoring the Knights 11-6 to take a 20-15 lead. The two teams battled for every point after that before the home team won 25-18.

Bainbridge’s offense clicked in the second set, taking a 6-0 lead. The Spartans then went on several small runs, increasing the lead to 19-6. During that run, the middle attackers helped set up an outside attack for junior Ella Piland. Piland’s use of dinks and kills had Bremerton struggling to find a rhythm. The Spartans offense closed out the second set, winning 25-7.

In the third set, Payne and McFadden had a smaller impact as the Spartans could not capture any momentum. Bremerton took advantage and hoisted a 5-2 lead. Bainbridge did not catch up to the Knights until they were tied at 9-9.

Payne and McFadden battled Bremerton standouts Jilliane Guevara and Mainalei Penitusi. Guevara and Penitusi gave the Knights a one-point lead but Payne and McFadden continued to answer back.

Bremerton looked like it might win that third set, taking a 20-18 lead. However, coach Andy Stephens called a timeout that flipped the game into the Spartans favor, as they scored seven unanswered points to take the set 25-20.

Bainbridge scored seven unanswered points after calling a timeout to secure the victory.
