Four Spartans take part in the West Sound Senior All-Star game.
BREMERTON – Finally, Mike Walsh hit a three pointer.
The senior wing, who went 0 for 2 during the season, got one to drop at the sixth annual West Sound Senior High School All-Star basketball game Tuesday night at the Bremer Center on the Olympic College campus.
Walsh led the Puget Sound All-Stars with 13 points as they lost to the Cascade All-Stars, 92-75.
Walsh also grabbed six rebounds and had an assist and a block.
“I got a good shooter’s roll on that one,” he said with a smile.
His teammates Nick Fling and Caleb Davis also chipped in six and eight points, respectively.
Fling had seven rebounds, three blocks and an assist while Davis had four rebounds, four assists and a steal.
“It was a lot of fun,” Fling said. “It was harder than I thought – I was a little winded there.”
All three were sad to hear of head coach Scott Orness’ departure, but they also said they understood.
“He’s leaving for all the right reasons,” Fling said. “I really respect that.”
While Fling hadn’t finished a bracket (“I like the underdogs,” he said. “I don’t like the top seeds this year,”) Walsh felt that Washington State, Kansas, Miami and UCLA will make the Final Four.
Davis had Kansas State, North Carolina, Arizona and Memphis.
In the girls game, Emily Farrar scored just four points, but three came on a big three point play near the end as her Puget Sound All-Stars defeated the Cascade All-Stars 52-47.
Farrar also grabbed several rebounds and put forth a strong effort on defense.
“I’m not in the same league or district as the other girls so they all know each other and I’m like, ‘hi, I’m from the island,’” she said. “It was fun.”
Farrar thinks the final four will be UCLA, Georgetown, Memphis and WSU or North Carolina.
“I think they have a shot,” the senior said of her future college taking down the Tar Heels – if they make it that far. “They have the top five defense in the country, but I think it’s the best, in my biased opinion.
“I love watching them play,” Farrar continued. “I haven’t missed a game all season – TiVo is my best friend.”
