The Bainbridge boys basketball team showed no mercy to North Mason Jan. 6, defeating the Bulldogs 64-18.
The Spartans capitalized early against the Bulldogs zone on offense.
“Any time we are against zone we just want to push the ball more,” coach Steve Haizlip said. “It really is more about moving the ball inside out and trusting our shots and teammates.”
The defense dominated throughout the game.
“Defense is what we take pride in,” Haizlip said. “Our guys are getting better every game, and we hold ourselves to high standards. It sets the tone.”
The Spartans dominated the first quarter, taking a 20-5 lead. Peyton Sprangers led the Spartans scoring seven points.
“We want it to touch the paint first then get open,” Haizlip said. “We have great shooters on this team so if you are open, shoot it.”
The Spartans continued to rack up points as Sam Nylund earned six points in the second quarter. Bainbridge took a 31-8 lead going into halftime.
The Spartans held the Bulldogs scoreless in the first four minutes of the third quarter and limited them to four points the entire period. Cooper Benjamin picked up six points in the third quarter to lead the winners.
Bainbridge’s offense slowed down in the fourth quarter, only scoring eight points, but still outscored the Bulldogs.
“It’s our defense and being dialed in,” Haizlip said. “We are ready to compete.”
