BI symphony to perform in ensembles

One of the drawbacks of Bainbridge Performing Arts temporary digs in the Pavilion’s No. 3 box: Not nearly enough stage space for a full orchestra.

But the Bainridge Symphony Orchestra found an answer.

For their Feb. 12 “Mozart on the Island” program, the orchestra will perform a few players at a time.

Guest conductor Bobby Collins will lead a quartet of chamber ensembles through the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, including the Serenade No. 11 for eight wind players. The program will also include an arrangement of Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 — the “Unfinished” Symphony — for six cellos.

“The Schubert was a neat project,” said Collins, who stepped in music director Mario Alejandro Torres accepted a university job. “The arrangement was a COVID project, which was sent out to cellists all over the world, and performances were compiled into a video. The Schubert ties into the Mozart pretty well. Schubert was definitely influenced by Mozart.”

Collins has history with the Bainbridge Symphony. He was a finalist, along with Torres, for music director in 2018, and added his French horn to the orchestra’s ranks last year.

Collins is involved with many other Puget Sound groups in the classical music scene.

“I’ve got a day job teaching elementary strings, too,” he said. “I love the variety, but it’s also a little bit exhausting. With each different organization, there’s a certain amount of administrative work that goes along with it, and it adds up.”

February is a particularly busy month. The BPA concert is at 3 p.m. at 403 Madison Ave. N. Reserved tickets are $18. Information: 206-842-8569, bainbridgeperformingarts.org.

Following that appearance, Collins will lead the Sound Ensemble in a program Feb. 18, then be on the podium for the Seattle Festival Orchestra’s concerts Feb. 25 and 26.
