Dan Schoonmaker, the former Poulsbo police chief, has been named the new head football coach at Bainbridge High School.
He is crossing Agate Pass Bridge to lead the Spartans after being the quarterback coach at North Kitsap High School last season.
After longtime standout QB Colton Bower graduated and went to Washington State University, Schoonmaker stepped in and helped new quarterback Cole Edwards lead the Vikings to the state championship game—something even his predecessor was unable to do.
Schoonmaker previously worked as co-head football coach at Poulsbo Middle School.
Schoonmaker is replacing Jeff Rouser, who resigned at the end of the 2022 season. Rouser finished 25-36 during his seven-year tenure at Bainbridge, including a 4-5 record last year.
Schoonmaker now works as deputy chief for the Port Orchard Police Department, but he is eyeing retirement just as his head coaching career is beginning to take off.
