UPDATE | Repairs postponed for Agate Pass Bridge work

With the Viking Fest in Poulsbo and the 67th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade in Bremerton this weekend — and the Memorial Day holiday following next weekend — the state Department of Transportation has announced it will push back the repair work on the Agate Pass Bridge until Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31.

Crews will close one lane of Highway 305 between 6 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31, near the span across Agate Passage to repair the damaged pedestrian railing on the bridge.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane during the bridge work and drivers should expect delays.

Flaggers will help direct traffic, and troopers from the Washington State Patrol will direct traffic through the Highway 305 intersection at Suquamish Way.

The work was originally scheduled to occur this weekend.

The railing on the bridge was damaged Tuesday, May 5 when an empty trailer broke free from the truck that was towing it and hit the pedestrian rail on one side of the bridge, then bounced off the other side.

State officials said the force of the impact bent and broke the railing on both sides, bent a steel member under the bridge and sheared off bolts.

Crews hand-fabricated the replacement railing — which is unique to the Agate Pass Bridge — over the last week.

In addition to replacing the broken railing, crews will also use an under-bridge-inspection-truck to inspect and repair the bent steel member and replace any sheared bolts.

The work will be completed rain or shine, officials said. The repair work will cost roughly $40,000.
