Learn CPR

To the editor:

I was involved in a serious bicycle crash in Fort Ward Park June 2 that resulted in loss of consciousness and fractures of multiple ribs and my right collarbone. My cycling companion and a passerby provided CPR guided by a 911 dispatcher; there’s little doubt that their coordinated efforts saved my life.

After regaining consciousness and being stabilized by EMTs, I was flown to Harborview where I stayed four nights. I am now at home making a slow but steady recovery.

I would like to extend my appreciation to all who helped me. I also note that the speed bumps in Fort Ward have new markings that will help cyclists avoid them. I encourage everyone who’s able to get CPR training. You never know when you may save a life.

Public records

To the editor:

The concept of controlling costs by reducing/eliminating or charging more for public records requests is a bad idea. It is perhaps the only way individuals can dig in and find out what City Hall is doing.

There are limited avenues of checks and balances. It is a small price to pay to help preserve transparency. If the city really wanted to save money they could be $6 million better off by not grossly overpaying for the police station property. But they do not want to talk about that.
