Spartans ace the Trojans

The Bainbridge Spartans volleyball squad swept the Olympic Trojans 25-5, 25-15, 25-19 Oct. 3.

Both teams began the night with a pair of service errors. However, Spartan Noella Rosentrater began to serve Bainbridge a momentum run with four aces to take an 11-2 lead.

The Trojans finally broke Rosentrater’s streak with Maleah Nicholson’s kill. Yet the Spartans offense limited its own mistakes to two passing errors and a couple of service errors in the first set. “It’s fun to see them make a good pass and load up their big guns, and I got quite a few of them,” BHS coach Andy Stephens said. Spartans Holley McFadden and Jameson Payne loaded up and fired away until the Spartans won the first set.

The Trojans began to battle in the second set. Josselyn McGarrah picked up the first point with an ace. Nicholson kept the Trojans in the lead with a kill too. Yet, Rosentrater picked up her fifth ace, and Rollins Anderson earned four straight aces to give the Spartans a 16-9 lead.

Olympic’s Aviyah Blackwell clawed the Trojans back into striking range. “We were losing focus a bit and allowed them to crawl back in,” Stephens said. “That can happen when you win by a big margin in the first set.”

Even though the Trojans crawled back, Spartan Emma Pendleton won the second set with an ace.

The Spartans and Trojans traded points in the third set, sitting at 14-14 at the halfway point. However, McFadden and Maia Greiwe shut down the Trojans offense. Payne ended the match with an ace.

Stephens said the Spartans “need to make sure we don’t lose focus and make sure we finish. We won’t stop until that scoreboard says 25.”
