South Kitsap is officially joining the flag football frenzy this winter—highlighted by being named an Olympic sport in 2028—after being listed as one of 30 high schools in the state to receive grant funding from the Seattle Seahawks to help launch a program for girls.

An Oct. 24 release by the NFL franchise announced that $117,000 in Seahawks and Seattle Seahawks Charitable Foundation funding would be distributed among the schools. The schools are also being provided with uniforms and flag football equipment kits from USA football.

“Together with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and Nike, the Seahawks are working toward the ultimate goal of having high school girls flag football being adopted as a state-sanctioned sport,” the Seahawks release states.

SK received $4,000 in funding with additional monies for equipment and uniforms and becomes the second high school in Kitsap County to announce the creation of a flag football team. North Kitsap did earlier this year.

An Oct. 31 statement from SKHS reads, “Thank you, Seattle Seahawks, for empowering our young student-athletes to reach for the stars!”

SKSD public information officer Amy Miller said details on the season are still vague, but the Wolves will be competing in familiar territory as all but one school in the 4A South Puget Sound League is listed as a grant recipient.

“The SPSL league agreed to take this on with the exception of Sumner High School,” she said. “The sport isn’t recognized by the WIAA, but it will be part of the Olympics in future years.”

This is the latest round of funding to be distributed since the Seahawks launched their efforts in 2021. There are now 64 teams expected to play in the 2023-24 winter sports season.
