4 teams finish top 10 at Island Invitational

As the temperature dropped outside, the competition heated up at the Island Invitational wrestling tournament Jan. 13.

Bainbridge

The Spartans hosted 14 schools and finished sixth with 120 points. Spartans Retto Peato kicked the tournament off at 132 pounds with a 4-0 victory. After a loss to North Kitsap’s Wyatt Rogden, he earned two more wins before falling into fourth place.

Noah Weiss and Baha Ali battled at 138 pounds. Weiss won 19-8 before losing two straight. Ali finished in second place. He won by pin against Viking Anders Aiken and 9-2 against Central Kitsap’s Trystyn Nelson.

Zane Turner won two matches by pin and decision at 144 pounds but fell in the semifinals by pin. He bounced back and won fifth place with an 8-0 victory.

Tyler Dodge had a tough 6-4 victory against Olympic’s Jackson Brown to reach the semis. Yet, he dropped a couple of matches and finished fifth with an 8-5 victory.

Wyatt Chabot entered as the two-seed at 157 pounds. After a third-period pin and 5-0 victory, Chabot reached the finals. However, he lost 6-3. Teammate Andrea Berteletti had a tough day at 165 pounds losing both of his matches.

Garrett Goade was the Spartans’ only boys champion in the tournament, going 3-0 at 175 pounds. Goade earned two pins then faced Viking Morgan Paul and squeaked out a 13-11 victory for the gold medal.

Hayden Broom finished third at 190 pounds. Broom split his first two matches by pins and fell into the consolation bracket. He responded with a first-period pin and 6-1 victory against Viking Marquis Vestal.

The girls competed in a round-robin tournament where three out of the five Spartans finished first. Natalie Noel won at 115-120 pounds, AJ Bjorgen won at 140-145 pounds with teammate Audrey Pitts placing second, and Sage Swalley won at 155-170 pounds. Carolyn Welch finished third at 130-135 pounds.

North Kitsap

North Kitsap won the Island Invitational with 223 points. Despite going 1-3, Nolan Hancock finished sixth at 113 pounds, earning a victory by pin.

Michael Desmond split his first two matches at 120 pounds and fell to the consolations. He rallied for a 6-2 victory and two pins to place fourth.

Isaiah Randle went 0-2 at 126 pounds, losing by pin and major decision. Wyatt Trogden was the first of a handful of Vikings to win at the tournament, going 3-0 at 132 pounds. Trogden pinned his first two opponents before winning 8-1.

Dayton Heymann won at 138 pounds with two pins and two decisions. Keenan Clark went 0-2 at 144 pounds.

After splitting two matches, Wyatt Sloman won four straight to earn third place at 150 pounds. Sloman earned three pins and a 10-2 major decision. Luan Bekstaksi split his first two matches, then earned a pin and three decision victories for third place.

Josue May went 2-2 in the tourney, with his final loss coming to his teammate Taylor Delmendo. Delmeno lost the following round to Olympic’s Miles Brown and finished fifth with a 5-0 victory.

Morgan Paul entered 175 pounds as the top seed. Paul won his first two matches before facing Goade in the final.

Ben Gomez cruised to a first-place medal at 190 pounds, earning three pins, among them Olympic’s Elijah Lampano. Zakaria Hammou did not have a match reach the second period. He pinned all his opponents within two minutes to earn the gold medal.

Jesus Mares ended the Vikings’ title run with a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds. Mares reached the semifinals with a pin against Central Kitsap’s Isaiah Amidon. However, he lost to Olympic’s Kevin Hudson and responded with another win before falling into fourth place.

Olympic

Olympic finished second with 174 points. Nate Payfer began at 106 pounds with a fifth-place finish, going 1-2 with a pin. Xion Horne went 2-2 at 113 pounds and finished fifth. He defeated Viking Hancock twice by pin.

Colby Wolfe won his first two matches by pins at 120 pounds but fell in the semifinals. He bounced back with a pin to earn fifth place.

Mason Manglona won at 126 pounds with three pins. Jasiah Masga reached the semifinals at 132 pounds before losing to Viking Trogden by pin. Masga bounced back with two major decision victories to finish third.

Gabriel Eriz went 2-2 at 144 pounds, earning two pins. Jackson Brown went 1-2 at 150 pounds and Wesley Tebo went 0-2 at 157 pounds.

Miles Brown finished third at 165 pounds. He won his first match within a minute but fell 6-2 in the semifinals. Brown responded with two first-period pins.

Thomas Swain went 1-2 at 175 pounds. Elijah Lampano finished fifth at 190 pounds. He earned a couple of pins before losing to Viking Gomez. Yet, he responded in the consolation bracket with a 5-0 victory.

Alex Bullman finished 3-1 and earned third place at 215 pounds. He got three pins, one against CK’s Brennan Hammond.

The two Trojan heavyweights dominated that bracket. Dequan Freeland had two pins while Kevin Hudson won by a pin then a decision against Viking Mares. Hudson defeated Freeland in the championship match.

Central Kitsap

CK finished fourth with 130 points. Nate Cronin went 1-1 at 106 pounds and finished second. He won 12-4 then lost by pin.

Aidan Hermida lost his first match at 120 pounds. He responded with four straight pins to finish third. Lincoln Fox went 0-2 at 132 pounds. Trysten Nelson finished third at 138 pounds. He fell to Spartan Ali but responded with a pin and a 10-2 major decision.

Andrew Rivers ended 2-2 with two pins at 144 pounds, and Andrew Cronin went 0-2 at 150 pounds. Jesse Anderson reached the semis at 157 pounds with a pin and a 7-4 decision. He finished fourth after falling to Viking Bekstaksi.

Keahi Bonseli went 2-2 at 165 pounds but failed to reach the podium while Adam Bayne went 2-2 and finished fourth at 175 pounds. Derek Potter finished 1-2 at 190 pounds, and Brennan Hammond finished 4-2 and claimed fifth at 215 pounds. Hammond had three pins, including Viking Nathaniel Leppard. Isaiah Amidon ended the Cougars tournament with a 0-2 record at heavyweight.
