Big smiles were everywhere during the first Music on the Green of 2024 — with good vibes from both the Steel Dragons Steel Orchestra and Bainbridge Bubble Day, a grassroots event with no official sanction.
About 70 people of all ages brought bubble wands, machines and more to the Winslow Green, and enjoyed the sunshine while the youth ensemble from Steel Dragons played songs like “Walkin’ on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves, “Africa” by Toto, “Jump in the Line” by Harry Belafonte and more. A few businesses along Winslow ran bubble machines as well.
Bubble organizer Gerald Simonsen, who lives across from Winslow Green, said that he bought a bubble machine during COVID and would blow bubbles from his balcony. It seemed to make people happy, he said, which gave him an idea: Bainbridge Bubble Day.
He began to spread the word among other residents, and even encouraged businesses around Winslow to participate. The goal was to “engulf Bainbridge in bubbles,” he said, and spontaneity was an essential part of the appeal.
Simonsen hopes that the bubbles will carry over into the Grand Old Fourth of July parade. “That’d be great – everyone blowing bubbles everywhere during the parade” he said.
