Climate event
An anti-Initiative 2117 event will take place July 18 at 7 p.m. at Grow Community Center, 395 Ambrose Lane on Bainbridge Island.
The initiative would repeal the state’s Climate Commitment Act, passed to fight climate change and reduce emissions, requiring businesses to pay for their pollution to go away. For example, it would cut funds to ferries, adding years to fixing that problem of updating that fleet.
Pulitzer author
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen and his wife, celebrated poet Lan Duong, will be in Bainbridge Island July 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Eagle Harbor Book Co.
Nguyen will be discussing his acclaimed works, including “The Sympathizer,” its sequel “The Committed,” and the haunting “A Man of Two Faces.” Duong will unveil her highly anticipated new poetry collection, “Nothing Follows.”
Then, on July 27 at 11 a.m., Nguyen returns for a Children’s Story Hour related to two books he co-authored with his children, Ellison and Simone: the hilarious “Chicken of the Sea” and the heartwarming “Simone.” Both events are free but seating is limited. Contact the business for reservations.
Lotto winner
Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s Gliding Eagle Market recently made someone a millionaire.
GEM sold the $1.3 million lottery ticket to one lucky winner who bought the ticket for the June 12 drawing, a PGST news release states.
The winner has come forward to claim their winnings from the Washington State Lottery office. The person has yet to reach out to GEM, however Kelly Bauch, C-Store manager, hopes they do. “A huge congratulations to the winner,” Bauch said. “We know they’re probably still processing the win, but we would love the opportunity to congratulate them in person and take a picture to hang in the store.”
To celebrate, GEM was given a banner announcing the winning ticket from the WSL office, which now hangs in the store. It is the highest-value winning ticket sold by GEM to date.
Man drowns
A 50-year-old man died July 1 after officials say he drowned after his kayak overturned while he was crabbing in Seabeck.
A Marine Unit from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene after the kayak flipped, and the man became entangled in a rope attached to a crab pot. Police say he was attempting to put a life jacket on but was hampered when it too was caught in the rope.
Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue was also called to the scene. The man was pulled from the water. He died at the scene.
KCSO issued a reminder to the public that a life jacket or personal flotation device should be worn when on the water in smaller personal crafts and vessels. “Life jackets must be onboard and easily accessible for each person aboard larger boats,” officials said.
Cyclist killed
A 70-year-old man was killed July 4 when he was struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in South Kitsap.
The incident happened around 10:50 a.m. on SW Lake Flora near Hidden Acres Place SW, a Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post states. The victim, an SK resident, died at the scene.
A 17-year-old girl driving the vehicle that struck the bicyclist stated she saw the man riding on a dirt portion of the roadway and was focused on the upcoming intersection when she felt an impact. She showed no signs of being impaired when she spoke with deputies, per KCSO.
Event canceled
Every year, Kitsap County has an event to put unclaimed remains to rest.
That won’t happen this year. A few week’s ago the medical examiner’s put out a news release on the unclaimed remains of people who had died in the county. Family and friends of all but one came forward. So the event won’t take place this year.
BIMA events
Charles Emerson will present a program on Color & Abstraction at 3 p.m. July 20 at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
The program talks about the Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s-’70s with the Cool School, Finish Fetish, Light and Space movement artists, along with Emerson’s studies in Venice on a Fulbright scholarship.
A week later at the same time and place curator Maymanah Farhat will give a presentation on 50 years of Women’s Studio Workshop at BIMA. Farhat will give an overview of the highs and lows of the history of the WSW.
Human services
Bainbridge Island is looking for volunteers to serve on the city’s Human Services Funding Task Force.
The task force reviews applications from nonprofits who request city funding and make recommendations to the council.

All-Comers track meets
The Bainbridge Kiwanis Club All-Comers track meets are taking place every Monday through Aug. 12 at the high school stadium track.
Sign in at 5:30 and compete at 6 p.m. Participation is free.
Also free are runs at Fort Ward Park every Saturday at 9 a.m.
Free concerts
The Sound of Summer Concert Series on Bainbridge Island is under way Wednesdays through Aug. 28.
The concerts at Battle Point Park start at 6:30 p.m.
Bands are: Eden, July 17; The High Steppers, July 24; Chance McKinney, July 31; Reposada, Aug. 7; The West Coast Feed, Aug. 14; Backstreet JellyRoll, Aug. 21; and Leroy Bell and His Only Friends, Aug. 28.
Pull weeds
Weed Warriors is having its monthly weed pulling event July 20, this time at Charles Schmid Waterfront Park.
The time has moved up to 10 a.m. to noon due to summer heat. Schmid was a frequent Weed Warrior. Bring tools to work with if you can.
Mayor meeting
Bainbridge Island Mayor Joe Deets is having his office hours July 13 from 10 a.m. to noon at CUPS Espresso on 123 Bjune Drive SE in Winslow.
