Drivers on Bainbridge Island got an unexpected surprise this week: The shutdown of part of Madison Avenue for street work didn’t start as planned.

Work on Madison Avenue has been pushed back due to delays with the construction company in charge of the work, city spokeswoman Kellie Stickney said Friday.

City officials had earlier announced that the main thoroughfare into downtown Winslow would be shut down to one lane starting Monday, Aug. 4.

The $553,009 street reconstruction project will stretch from High School Road to Winslow Way.

“The contractor had some delays,” Stickney said.

The postponement was due to the contractor’s schedule and the number of other projects the company is handling, she said.

Granite Construction was awarded the bid for the project in June.

The project is still expected to be complete by Friday, Sept. 19.

The improvements on Madison Avenue include excavation, asphalting, an overlay and pavement marking. Additionally, stormwater improvements and replacement of the curb ramps are planned at the Wyatt Way and Madison Avenue intersection.
