Bainbridge Island briefs

Shellfish closure

Shellfish harvesting is closed for Port Madison, Miller Bay and Agate Passage, along with Port Orchard Passage.

Tests show high levels of marine biotoxin paralytic shellfish poison, a Kitsap Public Health District news release says.

The closure is for all recreational shellfish harvesting for all species of clams, oysters and mussels. Shrimp and crab are not included in this closure.

Community picnic

When the Moritani Preserve Community Picnic takes place Sept. 2 participants will be treated to a new entryway.

The picnic is the end-of-summer celebration and fundraiser for the preserve, put on by the Bainbridge Island Parks and Trails Foundation.

Tree thinning and replanting at the southeast entrance in June has made a huge difference. BI Metro Parks & Recreation District superintendent Lydia Roush said: “There’s tons of new sword ferns regenerating, tons of new osoberry (Indian plumb) coming up already. It’s beautiful.”

Other plants include: Oregon grape, bitter cherry, red flowering currant, mock orange, dogwood and kinnikinnick along the path, along with granite boulders.

It’s all part of ongoing restoration at the preserve, which was gifted to the community in 2017.

Flamenco workshop

Flamenco dancer Savannah Fuentes will again perform on Bainbridge Island, but this time she will also teach a workshop so people can better appreciate and understand the art form.

The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at Island Center Hall, 8395 Fletcher Bay Road. The workshop is before that from 5:30-7 p.m. It will cover Flamenco origins, rhythms and basic movements.

Cost for the workshop is $30, for the performance $20 and for both $45, or $35 for students. For tickets go to www.savannahf.com
