Great job
Letter to the editor:
The Bainbridge Island Planning Department and City Council did a great job on the proposed crematorium on BI.
BI has never had a crematorium. City staff and volunteer public servants on the Planning Commission were able to build consensus on the issue by listening to public input as well as the interests of local business owners.
Our city staff worked in a coordinated manner to recommend an approach (prohibition) that did not harm an important local business but honored the goals and policies in the Comprehensive Plan. That required a delicate balance that worked to the benefit of all, including citizens.
Special acknowledgement goes to Patricia Charnas and HB Harper in the Planning Department, and Kirsten Hytopolous and Ashley Mathews on the City Council. The outcome of their work and engagement with the community will benefit the island’s natural resources, the land, air and water, and assure protections for public health for families and children, all without increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
