Toolbox Dispatch: Empowering Bainbridge youth through handyman services

Clients can book small projects to help youth develop hands-on experience in the trades.

Toolbox Dispatch, a Bainbridge-based handyman service, is not only meeting the needs of its community but also investing in future talent by offering young individuals hands-on training in the trades.

Launched in early 2024 as an affiliate of Cogwheel Construction, Toolbox Dispatch has quickly built a reputation for handling a variety of smaller home improvement projects, from installing smoke detectors to assembling furniture. However, company owner Brandon Kellar says their true passion lies in helping the next generation acquire valuable, marketable skills.

“We’re a new handyman service, and the community definitely needs it,” says Kellar. “But we’re also focused on creating opportunities for younger people who are interested in learning practical trade skills like painting and carpentry.”

The team includes a mix of experienced professionals, known as ‘Toolbox Specialists,’ as well as high school-aged ‘Toolbox Helpers,’ who assist on projects such as painting accent walls or assembling furniture.

Currently, the company is looking for clients willing to offer learning opportunities to these young individuals by booking smaller projects that are great for hands-on training. “We want to work with customers who are flexible with student schedules and interested in having something like an accent wall painted,” Kellar says.

Safety and supervision are key priorities at Toolbox Dispatch. Each young worker is always paired with a seasoned professional who oversees the project. While the company holds an endorsement to hire minors, there are strict limitations on what they can do. “They can use hand tools, but not power tools,” Kellar explains. “Painting and assembling furniture are perfect entry-level tasks that allow them to gain experience while ensuring everything is done safely.”

Toolbox Dispatch’s services cater to a wide range of needs, from general handyman jobs to more specific tasks like painting, fixing older properties, or handling small repairs.

Beyond serving individual homeowners, Toolbox Dispatch is also gaining attention from real estate agents preparing homes for sale. “We’re excited to be a resource for people in the community who don’t have other options for small projects,” Kellar adds.

By focusing on youth training and community engagement, Toolbox Dispatch hopes to make a lasting impact on Bainbridge and its surrounding areas. “There’s a big push to promote trade skills, and this is our way of contributing,” says Kellar. “We’re giving young people hands-on experience they wouldn’t get otherwise, while also offering high-quality services to our clients.”
