Since 1958, the Kiwanis Club of Bainbridge Island has been a pillar of community compassion, creating positive change through its support of youth development.
With a commitment to changing the world, one child and one community at a time, the organization has become a cornerstone of support for local families, fostering leadership and lasting relationships among the next generation.
At the heart of their efforts is a commitment to encouraging leadership and community participation among young people. “High school Key Clubs and middle school Builders Clubs are set up to develop leadership skills and community participation by kids,” notes Hank Keaton, President of the Kiwanis Club of Bainbridge Island.
The club hosts several events each year, including summer’s popular all-comers track meets – weekly gatherings where 200 children and their families come together for a night of community fun. “It’s controlled chaos,” jokes Kiwanis Club former President, Jim Copen “You’ve got five or six hundred people in this stadium. It’s pretty chaotic, and it’s a hoot.”
For families, these events offer affordable, engaging activities that promote bonding while strengthening ties among neighbors.
Bainbridge Kiwanis is also known for its annual Fourth of July miniature golf event, attracting 600 to 700 locals. This event, along with efforts like the holiday wreath sale and the “Shred Fest,” raise funds for the club’s most significant initiative: scholarships for graduating seniors.
Historically, Kiwanis has offered up to 10 scholarships each year. This year, after personally interviewing 16 applicants, they were so impressed that “We gave scholarships to all 16 of them!” Copen says. “You walk out of there saying, ‘You know what, our future is in good hands. We’re going to be okay.’”
Despite these successes, the club faces challenges in sustaining its efforts, and encourages those interested in supporting youth and families to reach out and consider getting involved with Kiwanis. “One thing we really feel is critical is to attract new members to continue to serve the youth of Bainbridge Island,” Keaton says.
For Carrie Chavez, Bainbridge Kiwanis, Community Engagement Director, the smiles and connections fostered through their events and programs are just two rewards of membership. “I like seeing in person the real impact and joy that what we do brings to the community,” she reflects.
