A large, mixed-breed dog escaped serious injury and was rescued after falling into a deep decommissioned well near Suquamish Oct. 14.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a Suquamish Way address when people at the scene called for help. Firefighters found the dog balanced on a bucket about 30 feet below ground level in water that was estimated to be 20 feet deep, per NKF&R. The well’s opening was about 3 feet in diameter.

Crews requested additional assistance from firefighters specially trained in technical rescue skills to ensure the safety of bystanders, firefighters and the dog. After putting safety measures in place, the specialists returned the dog to the surface.

Community members assured firefighters that the well will be capped to prevent future mishaps. An officer from Kitsap Animal Control transported the dog to Kitsap Humane Society where he was examined by veterinary staff, found to be uninjured and returned to his family, NKF&R says.

Kitsap Special Operations Response Team includes members from each of the county’s seven fire agencies, trained and equipped in technical specialties such as trench rescue, high-angle rescue, structural collapse and confined space.
