Kitsap Humane Society partners to also help people

Kitsap Humane Society has partnered with Greater Good Charities to expand its services in Kitsap County, providing essential food and supplies to families and animal welfare organizations.

As the only state ambassador for GGC, KHS has received over 100,000 pounds of food and supplies this year.

GGC’s GOODS program, which gathers surplus or short-dated items from manufacturers, distributors and retailers, operates similarly to a food bank. Goods are donated, but freight, warehouse and program costs are covered by handling fees and donations, costing KHS about nine cents per pound. Upon receiving shipments, KHS serves as a multi-county distribution hub, supplying human and animal welfare nonprofits and stocking its own Pet Food Pantry to support families in need.

“The opportunity to work with Greater Good Charities has really opened up what we’re able to do for the Kitsap community and beyond,” KHS co-executive director Jamie Nocula said. “We’ve always been proud of what we’ve been able to do for animals, and now we’re able to directly assist people as well. We know all too well that if humans are faced with food insecurity, so are their companion animals.”

With Bremerton Foodline’s partnership, KHS has distributed resources to organizations like Central Kitsap Food Bank, ShareNet Food Bank, PAWS of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap, Olympic Peninsula Humane Society and The Salvation Army.

Bremerton Foodline executive director Cori Kauk said, “When nonprofits work together like this, it makes us all stronger – the organizations, the community and the families we serve.”
