A 62-year-old Miami man was in Kitsap County Superior Court Nov. 18 facing four charges, including attempted murder.
If convicted, he faces life in prison and a $50,000 fine on that charge alone and the same penalty for first-degree assault. He’s also charged with unlawful imprisonment (maximum of 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine); and malicious mischief (1 year, $5,000).
Bail was $500,000.
Court records show Bremerton police responded Nov. 12 at 9:07 p.m. to a motel in the 5000 block of Kitsap Way in Bremerton for an assault with a man hitting a woman 16 times with an aluminum baseball bat. Police found the victim with blood pouring down her face, neck and head, along with a bump on her head that bled into her hair.
She said she arrived home from work and was approached from behind walking to her apartment by her estranged husband with a bat. “I was not gonna allow him to get me to the ground because I feel like he would’ve finished me off,” police report her as saying.
He was yelling at her at the time, and she was screaming. She said the attack was interrupted by two good samaritans who yelled for him to stop. One man chased the attacker away. Security footage at the hotel shows the attack.
The suspect got in a car and almost ran over the witness.
Later, police went to his 91-year-old mother’s home. She is a disabled veteran. They contacted her daughter, who was concerned for her mom’s safety after hearing of the attack. “Find my mother,” she said to detectives.
Talking to the victim, police found out that her estranged husband was a “scammer” who likes to sue people and organizations. He sued her former employer, who then fired her after 20 years.
She filed for divorce, and he started stalking her. On Oct. 28 she went to where he was staying and assaulted her when she wouldn’t change her mind about the divorce. Finally he let her go, and days later he slashed her tires.
The suspect has an extensive criminal history in Virginia, Nevada, South Dakota, Hawaii and Utah for felonies including kidnapping, rape, assault and immoral communications with a minor.
The victim, 60, married the suspect in June. He has drained her resources, isolated her from her family and abused her ever since, police records say.
