New theater group focuses on accessibility in Kitsap

Drawing from her passion for theater and to create opportunities for underrepresented actors, Inclusive Stage founder Sara Dawson-Leggett envisions an experience where people with disabilities can shine on stage and feel welcome in the audience.

“I’ve been involved in theater since I was five,” Dawson-Leggett said. “But after becoming chronically ill, I realized I couldn’t participate in the same way anymore. That’s when I started dreaming about a theater where accommodations and inclusivity are the foundation.”

Inclusive Stage seeks to address the lack of disabled actors and the challenges faced by disabled theatergoers. Dawson-Leggett pointed to inspirations like a Fifth Avenue Theatre production that featured a deaf actor performing through American Sign Language. “Seeing that made me realize how much representation matters,” she said.

Inclusive Stage is in its early stages. Dawson-Leggett and a small group of supporters planned to hold their first board meeting to establish bylaws, discuss fundraising strategies and outline goals for productions.

Although no productions are scheduled yet, the group hopes to start small, potentially with a showcase of diverse performances, including monologues, dances and songs. Dawson-Leggett emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where anyone, regardless of ability, can participate.

“If someone wants to audition, we’ll find a way to accommodate them,” she said. “Whether they use mobility aids, experience developmental delays, or need to submit a video audition, we want to ensure there’s a place for everyone.”

The organization plans to focus on making performances accessible to audiences. Dawson-Leggett envisions offering services like ASL interpreters, CART captioning and venues designed with Americans with Disabilities Act compliance in mind.

While the road ahead involves challenges like funding and finding a permanent home, Dawson-Leggett remains optimistic. “This is my dream, but it’s also a community effort. I’ve been amazed at how many people have shown interest and want to help make this a reality.

“I just want people to see what’s possible when we prioritize inclusivity,” Dawson-Leggett said.
