1st Fix-It Fair coming to BI March 1

Bike won’t ride? Necklace won’t clasp? Coffee machine won’t work? There’s a guy for that.

The countywide event series, the Fix-It Fair, will take place on Bainbridge Island for the first time at the Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network, in partnership with Sustainable Bainbridge, March 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

About a dozen fixers, tinkers and specialists will be available to repair household objects, including clothing, textiles, small appliances, lamps, vacuums, bicycles and small electronics. It will also include specialists for jewelry and computer maintenance.

The events are free, and each attendee can bring up to two items they can carry. Items must be clean, and anything microwave-sized or larger is not eligible.

While fixes aren’t guaranteed, the fixers will do their best. For best results, event organizers say attendees should bring repair manuals and replacement parts, if needed. For example, organizers recommend attendees interested in mending clothing bring thread, fabric or yarn that matches the item. Various thread colors will be available on-site.

The Kitsap County Solid Waste Division began the Fix-It Fair series as a way of reducing trash destined for landfills. By repairing items instead of purchasing new ones, the life of each item is extended, which conserves fiscal and physical resources. Additionally, the fairs connect neighbors and proliferate repair knowledge and skills, which contributes to the county’s community resilience, the agency wrote on its website.
