Firefighters with the Bainbridge Island Fire Department put out the last hot spots at a house fire on Miller Road shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire department was called to the 12300 block of Miller Road just after 4 a.m. March 11 for a possible brush fire, and firefighters discovered a fully-involved structure fire when they arrived.

The residence was a complete loss. Bainbridge fire officials said the sole occupant of the home, an elderly man, escaped from the home before it was consumed by flames after his cat woke him up.

The cat had not been found as firefighters were wrapping up their work just before 11 a.m.

Miller Road, which had been blocked to traffic for five hours while firefighters battled the blaze, was expected to be reopened soon.
