Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:

AUGUST 18

12:17 a.m. An officer discovered damage to a telephone utility box on Parfitt Way and Wood Avenue. It appeared from tire tracks that a vehicle had driven straight across the intersection and into the box, knocking the box backwards. Fresh motor oil was visible in the surrounding gravel. Also found conveniently nearby was a leather booklet containing a manual and insurance information for a Volkwagen Jetta, registered to a residence on Wood Avenue. Officers drove to the apartment complex and found a green VW Jetta with damage to its front bumper parked outside. A man identified as the car owner’s father answered the door at the residence and allowed officers to interview his son. The son said he had been driving to the restaurant where he works to get dinner when his foot slipped out of its sandal and hit the clutch instead of the brake. He said his car had gotten stuck in the gravel and he had pushed it out, but he didn’t see any damage to the utility box. An officer noted the smell of intoxicants on the son’s breath. Photographs of the scene and vehicle were entered into evidence. A report was forwarded to prosecutors for charging.

3:22 p.m. A Tolo Road resident reported that prescription medicine and a book of compact discs had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle. He said the theft may have occurred when the car was parked at Safeway, or later when it was parked at his home. The medicine included Attalnol and Oxycontin. Police advised the man to alert his pharmacy in case someone attempted to fill the stolen prescription, and to lock his vehicle in the future.

7:04 p.m. A Sunrise Drive resident reported that a Gateway laptop had been stolen from her home. She suspected her son, whom she had kicked out of the house several weeks earlier, was responsible for the theft. She said she had found the window to his former bedroom jimmied open. The son had been camping at Fay Bainbridge State Park . The woman and her husband attempted to contact him there, and by cell phone, without results, leading them to believe he had stolen the computer. The investigation continues.

11:57 p.m. Officers responded to a burglary in progress on Capstan Drive. A resident advised that his wife had been in an upstairs bathroom when she heard a crashing sound. She woke her husband to ask him if he was OK, thinking he had fallen out of bed. Investigating further, they found that the front door of their house had been kicked in. An officer found a shoe print on the door. Damage was estimated at $500.

AUGUST 19

12:16 a.m. Officers investigating a burglary on Capstan Drive were called to an attempted burglary on Tolo Road. A resident said he and his wife were asleep in an upstairs bedroom when they heard a crashing noise downstairs. They went down and found the front door partially open and the door jamb broken. No one could be seen outside. The resident said the dead bolt on the door had been locked. An officer found a faint shoeprint on the door. No suspects.

AUGUST 21

3:19 p.m. Two officers were assaulted after confronting a man accused of shoving a woman at the Bainbridge ferry terminal. The woman told police that the man had been acting aggressively toward her that week, and two days before had shoved her with his shoulder. On Aug. 21 the woman identified the man as he disembarked the ferry and an officer contacted him. The man denied having been in a verbal confrontation or shoving the woman, but became increasingly hostile toward the officer during questioning. As the officer asked the man for his name and date of birth, the man said the officer didn’t have “probable cause” and began walking away. The officer told the man he was being detained for questioning and he responded, “You don’t know the law, I know the law.” A second officer arrived but the man said he didn’t have to cooperate with them because his family had been on the island for 100 years. He then said an obscenity to the officers and started to walk away again. One officer grabbed the man and told him to put his hands behind his back. The man tried to strike the officers and after a brief struggle was taken to the ground. Additional units were called in. Both officers sustained minor injuries in the struggle. An officer began reading the man his Miranda rights, and the man interrupted and said he knew them already. When asked if he would speak with officers, he said “I’m not talking under duress, you all have your guns on me.” An officer responded that no one had their gun drawn. The man was booked into Kitsap County Jail for two counts of third-degree assault on an officer and a count of fourth degree assault for previously shoving the woman.

4:47 p.m. A woman reported her identity had been stolen online. She said that five days before she had trouble logging into her America On Line account and was directed to a site that asked for the last four digits of her social security number to log in. She entered the numbers then quickly realized it was a mistake. She contacted her bank and was told that four small amounts had already been drawn from her account. The case was recorded.

10:48 p.m. An officer was driving westbound on High School road when his patrol car was nearly struck by an older, gold Mercedes Benz exiting the Safeway parking lot. The officer stopped the Mercedes near the roundabout and contacted its driver, a minor, who smelled strongly of alcohol. The driver said he had failed to see the patrol car when he pulled out of the parking lot. At first he denied having drunk anything before driving, but eventually told the officer he had taken seven shots of vodka at Port Madison earlier that evening. The driver was arrested, and the officer noted he was covered and dirt and walking unsteadily as he got into the patrol car. The driver provided a breath alcohol test that registered 0.115. He was transported to Kitsap County Juvenile Detention and booked for being an intoxicated minor, and for operating a vehicle after drinking alcohol.

AUGUST 22

10:15 a.m. A bicycle-on-bicycle collision was reported at Miller Road and SR-305. Two cyclists were eastbound on Miller Road approaching SR-305 and planning to cross Miller and take the crosswalk across the highway. The rider of the leading bicycle reportedly yelled “Let’s cross here,” and swerved left, colliding with the trailing bicycle. Injuries were minor.

1:10 p.m. A Bainbridge man came to the station and reported that his vehicle had been keyed while it was parked at a party at his girlfriend’s home. The man suspected his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend had scratched his vehicle. He said the ex-boyfriend would likely deny the accusation, but he wanted the case recorded anyway for insurance purposes. The ex-boyfriend was contacted and denied the accusation. Damage was estimated at $200.
