The Bainbridge Island School Board appointed Mary Ellen “Mev” Hoberg to the vacant District 3 director position at its meeting Thursday.

Hoberg has been a classroom volunteer for the past several years, and has been serving as the vice president of the Parent Teacher Organization Coordinating Council. Her children attend Eagle Harbor High School and Sonoji Sakai Intermediate School.

Five candidates had applied for the post, which was left vacant by the resignation of John Tawresey in early March.

“We are fortunate to have had very highly qualified candidates,” said Board President Patty Fielding. “Each brought different experiences and qualities to the table.”

“It was Mev’s incredible contributions to the district and her leadership roles in school affairs that made her stand out,” said District Superintendent Faith Chapel.

Hoberg will be sworn in at the board meeting on Thursday, April 26.

“I am thrilled and honored and am looking forward to working with the current board members,” Hoberg said.
