Firefighters were dispatched to a single-family home at 11345 Battle Point Drive at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday night where flames were visible through the front door and windows of the first floor.
The home’s owner lives in Seattle and the house was vacant at the time of the blaze, Bainbridge Island Fire Department Fire Marshal Jared Moravec said.
Crews ran a hose through the door and cut a hole in the roof to access flames that had spread into an attic. The fire was extinguished quickly and did not penetrate the partial second story.
Moravec said the structure is probably a total loss due to extensive heat and smoke damage on both floors.
Investigators are considering the fire accidental. Moravec said it was likely ignited by a wall heater, although the exact sequence of events has not been determined.
No injuries were reported among the 20 responding firefighters or any civilians. Response time was 6.5 minutes.
