School grounds will be quiet tomorrow across Bainbridge Island as teachers walk off the job to protest the state Legislature’s inadequate funding of public education.
Teachers and families will gather in downtown Winslow to greet morning commuters with signs displaying their displeasure for the lack of state funding. Educators will also caravan to Olympia to meet with Sen. Christine Rolfes, said David Layton, the president of the Bainbridge Island Education Association, the union that represents public teachers on the island.
There will be no protesting in front of schools or on school grounds, Layton noted.
“That’s not what the message is,” he said. “There’s still going to be classified people [on campus] and deliveries [going on] and we just want school to be neutral.”
Parents were asked Monday to find alternate care for their school-aged children during the walkout. Afternoon activities are not expected to be impacted as teachers involved with after-school programs should be back from Olympia in time, Layton said.
Layton has said repeatedly that the protest is not aimed at the local school district, but rather at the state Legislature for not keeping its promise to fund education.
