Senior Dental Care: Washington State Smile Partners, a local non-profit, has opened a Kitsap County preventive dental care clinic at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center. Licensed dental hygienists screen for dental disease, clean teeth, apply fluoride sealants, and provide gum care. Anyone 60 years and older may use the service. All insurance accepted, including Medicaid. For low-income clients without insurance, fees are reduced below already-low rates. The clinic is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays. IVC Volunteers: Volunteers are urgently needed for Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, a non-profit committed to assisting the elderly and those temporarily in need with the common tasks of daily living. A volunteer may drive people to important medical appointments, grocery shop or run errands, read to a blind person, clean and/or organize, etc. Volunteers do as much or as little as they like and choose their own areas of service. BAC Goes Botanical: Plants offer rich possibilities to artists, a range of beautiful structures and colors, and an endless source of ideas and metaphors. In June, BAC artists explore botanical imagery in paintings, prints, photography, glass, and ceramics, with a talk from 4-5:30 p.m. June 26 by Susan Bird Olds on “Decoding the Blossom: Flower Symbolism in Art History.” Admission: $15. BITV Summer Camps: Bainbridge Island Television’s exciting summer camps include Kids Animation, Teen Filmmaking, Kid’s Broadcasting and TV Fusion. Completed projects will air on BITV. Maureen Bydalek: Original work by artist and personal trainer Maureen Bydalek is now on display at Bainbridge Athletic Club, 11700 Meadowmeer Circle. KiDiMu Summer Camps: Kids Discovery Museum offers a variety of summer camps for children ages 3-10, featuring music, science, cooking, literacy, theater and imaginary play adventures. Computer Classes: Free computer classes will be offered at the Bainbridge Public Library in June. The final class, Internet 201, will be offered from 10-11:30 a.m. June 24. Furrytale Camp: Furrytale Farm will hold a series of week-long summer camp sessions to help kids ages 9-14 learn what it means to take responsibility for an animal. They’ll learn to feed, clean, groom, medicate, rehabilitate, and communicate, and help reduce abuse. Grand Old Fourth Volunteers: Calling all volunteers – the Grand Old Fourth of July is in need of some enthusiastic and talented volunteers to help stage our event. We currently have positions open for Street Fair vendor support; script/ticket/game managers for inflatable games at Waterfront Park; traffic control for street closures; the Chamber of Commerce information booth; water boys and/or girls for parade participants; and Teen Take Over supervisors – a great new attraction. Chinese Mandarin Lessons: Doing business with or traveling to China? Or just wish to learn a beautiful language? Russian Oils: The work of Russian painter Yuri Volkov is on display now at Director’s Gallery, 126 Madrone Lane. Volkov, widely collected throughout Russia and Europe, stayed on Bainbridge for four months and during that time produced island- and Seattle-inspired oils. Info: 842-6000.

Peace Vigil: Women in Black stand silently for peace every Friday evening from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. on the southwest corner of 305 and Winslow Way near the Chamber of Commerce. Farmers Market: It’s Summer Solstice, an important day for our planet and its relationship to the sun. Celebrate with the fruits of the earth at the Bainbridge Farmers Market, where you’ll find the makings of a solstice feast with fresh, leafy greens, beets, onions, carrots, bread, wine, cheese, flowers and more. Cesar Medel: Nationally-known recording artist Cesar Medel will perform at 5 p.m. June 21 at Bethany Lutheran Church. His latest CD, “Eternal Light,” is a collection of Christian music and hymns. Happy Birthday, Jean Atwater: A celebration of Jean Atwater’s 85th birthday will be held on June 22 at Eagle Harbor Church in downtown Winslow. Benefit Bake Sale: The neighbors of Azalea Way will hold a lemonade/baked goods sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22 at the intersection of Azalea Way and Wing Point Way, and where Wing Point Way meets the golf path. The sale, masterminded by the neighborhood’s youngest philanthropists in response to last weekend’s car wash, will benefit the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

Mandarin Learning Fair: Bainbridge Mandarin Learning Center invites the community to its school fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 22 at Hyla Middle School, off Bucklin Hill Road. At this potluck picnic gathering, children will display their achievements in school work, performing songs and reciting Chinese poems. Star Gazing: Observe “The Glorious Globular Clusters of Summer” at 8 p.m. June 28 at Ritchie Observatory, Battle Point Park. These “fuzzy blobs,” only visible in summer, have long intrigued backyard astronomers. Street Dance and BBQ: With face painting, food, live music and more inflatable rides than you can shake a stick at, Winslow Way rarely sees so much densely packed evening action as the annual July Third Street Dance and BBQ. The party runs from 6-11 p.m. July 3 along Winslow Way. Highlights include music by perennial faves The Original Fenderskirts; a children’s craft tent; inflatable rides for children plus face painting, sidewalk chalk, a dress-up photo booth and a climbing wall; cotton candy, shave ice, BBQ, and the Winslow Oasis, where adults can enjoy a glass of wine or frosty beer. Grand Old Fourth: The 41st annual Grand Old Fourth of July celebrates a tribute to the Fabulous Fifties. The day’s activities will include its centerpiece, “the Zaniest Small Town Parade in America.” The Street Fair on Bjune Street and Waterfront Park boasts 120 vendors with an eclectic mix of items. There’ll be music at the Waterfront Park stage. Also returning this year is the Classic Car Show and the festive and fun Beer Garden, complete with a Hank Williams Jr. cover band and dancing. Nia Fliam and Agus Ismoyo will introduce you to the tradition and technique of this ancient art form as they show you how to create your own vibrant detailed cloth. Watercolor Workshop: Carole Hillsbery teaches “Watercolor on-the-Go!” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 19 and 20 at the Creativity Center, 9463 Business Park Lane. Students will create completed watercolors from on-location sketches. Discover exciting new shapes, concepts and designs! Day one, do quick studies outdoors, sketching with contour line and ink. Relay for Life: Celebrate loved ones lost; remember our survivors; fight back at Relay. Those words constitute the call to action for Relay for Life of Bainbridge, a now-annual summer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Bluegrass Festival and Family Fun Fair: The island’s all-day bluegrass music celebration and family fun fair is fast becoming a summer tradition. The event, which benefits the historic Transmitter Building at Battle Point Park, runs from noon to 8 p.m. July 26 on the park grounds. Star Party and Planetarium Show: Observe “Jupiter and Its Moons” at 8 p.m. July 26 at Ritchie Observatory, Battle Point Park. Jupiter will be near opposition – opposite from the Sun as seen from the Earth – and visible almost all night. Thoroughly Modern Millie: BPA Theatre School’s Camp Broadway collaborates with Bainbridge Dance Center in summer 2008 to stage the hit Broadway show “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” which runs July 30-Aug. 3 at Bainbridge Performing Arts, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. The story centers on young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s 1922 in New York, a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.
