The investigation into allegations that a teacher at Bainbridge High School had inappropriate conduct with a student will likely not be finished this month.
“The investigation is requiring more effort than we had originally thought,” said Bainbridge Police Chief Matthew Hamner.
“It’s more comprehensive than what we expected,” he said.
Bainbridge High and school district officials announced on Feb. 25 that administrators from the high school had contacted the police department and asked the department to investigate allegations that a teacher had “inappropriate conduct” with a student at BHS. School officials said administrators had been told of the allegations late in the afternoon the day before.
The teacher, who has not been identified, remains on paid administrative leave.
The school district and police department have been tight-lipped about the allegations and have released no new details in the past three weeks.
Officials have not said how long ago the inappropriate conduct occurred, whether it was a single incident or a pattern of behavior, or the type of inappropriate conduct that was alleged. A recent crime log published by the police department, however, labeled the incident as “sexual misconduct” with a minor.
Bainbridge police said earlier the investigation was expected to take a few weeks.
Hamner said that it’s common for investigations to expand in scope as more information is obtained and other questions arise.
“That is common with investigations,” Hamner said.
Hamner said the investigation would be thorough and objective, but he would not estimate when it might be wrapped up.
“We are expending more time and effort that we had originally thought it would take,” he said.
“The reasons for that will become apparent as we are able to release information,” Hamner said.
