Taking 12 out of 39?

It’s not as easy as it sounds.

The Bainbridge High Spartans will wrap up their second day of volleyball tryouts Tuesday evening, with nearly 40 players hoping to make a roster that will be limited to a dozen.

Head Coach Julie Miller wasn’t looking forward to making the necessary cuts.

“That’s never the fun part,” Miller said.

“We’d like to keep everybody we could, but we know we just can’t do it,” she said.

The Spartans look to have a bit of experience this coming season.

Miller said five veterans from last year’s squad, which went to the playoffs and finished with a 13-7-0 record, have returned this year. The veterans include libero Emma Burgess, the MVP of the Metro League (Mountain) last year who was also named by the Seattle Times to its all-area team.

The team’s first practice is 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The Spartans will start play Sept. 7 in a tournament, Miller said.

Metro League volleyball competition for Bainbridge starts on Sept. 20, with an away game against Ingraham High.

The Spartans will play their first home volleyball game on Tuesday, Sept. 24, against Bishop Blanchet.

Besides the Bainbridge gridders, scores of Spartans returned to BHS this week for the start of fall sports practice, with the girls swim team the first to take the plunge, with a 6:30 a.m. practice Monday, followed by the first girls soccer practice, at noon.

The football team had its first practice last week.
