Fastpitchers near elimination

REDMOND – When the pressure is on and the Spartans need a win in a big game, Lindsay Willmann is there to deliver her best.

But Bainbridge ran into a incredibly tough pitcher in Issaquah’s Mikencie Vols.

She became the first pitcher to blank the Spartans all season, striking out several batters as the Eagles defeated Bainbridge 1-0 to move into the loses bracket of the 3A Sea-King District 2 tournament Friday at Marymoor Park in Redmond.

The Spartans put two runners on board in the first inning, but she got out without giving up a run.

Issaquah got a run in the first on a base hit.

Bainbridge was held down until the seventh, when Lindsay Willmann, Chelsie Kakela and Brittany Wisner all reached on base hits.

Caitlin McCormick hit a dribbler to Vols who just got Kakela at home for the force, then came back to strike out Kaitlin Gaspich and Lauren Reichert.

“They were deciding to swing the bat just too late,” head coach Liz McCloskey said. “They were letting too many strikes go by, but he (the umpire) had a very weird strike zone.

“We had our opportunity in the first inning,” McCloskey continued. “We have to be more aggressive at the plate.

“Overall it was a very well played game, but we had our chances and we couldn’t capitalize.”

Lindsay Willmann threw a one-hitter in Bainbridge’s 3-0 win versus Skyline Thursday.

Clara Dunn helped the cause with a big two-run double in the sixth inning.

Willmann struck out 10.

Bainbridge played Holy Names yesterday.

If they won, they move onto the 3A state tournament next week in Tacoma.

Porter lone Spart to state

Bainbridge freshman tennis player Grace Porter was the third seed from Metro coming into this week’s 3A Sea-King District 2 tournament. She made sure she left as the third seed from District 2, becoming the only Spartan to qualify for state.

To get to that point, she beat Lakeside’s Andrea Augustine 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and defeated Sammamish’s Anissa Bryant-Swift 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

From there, she lost to eventual district champ in Holy Names’ Natalie Allen 2-6, 7-5, 4-6.

Head coach Mike Anderson said that Allen is a “grinder” who keeps the ball in play and makes very few mistakes, while Porter likes to play points fast.

“(The third set) was a very close set,” Anderson said. “It was back and forth and Natalie just eked it out.

“But Natalie ended up winning (the district title) so that just shows that Grace isn’t that far behind,” Anderson continued.

Porter moved on to state with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bellevue’s Sarah Ebrahami, then beat out Holy Names’ Rachel Storz for the third seed 6-1, 3-2 when Storz retired due to heat exhaustion.

“It was the girls’ third match of the day and it was getting hot,” Anderson said. “It was cold in the morning but by 4 o’clock it was 70-80 degrees. We haven’t played in that weather all year.

“But Grace was still (going) strong.”

Dylan Skeffington didn’t fare as well as he was eliminated by Bishop Blanchet’s Spencer Goll 6-0, 6-3 in the first round.

The 3A state tournament is next week at Tri-City Court Club and Kamiakin High School.

Tracksters make state

Several Bainbridge track athletes are headed to state thanks to their performance at the 3A Sea-King District 2 meet at the Southwest Complex in West Seattle.

Emily Farrar qualified with her second place finish in the 3200 run. Theresa Johansen qualified with her second place finish in the discus throw while Cheyne Clark qualified with his fourth place finish in the pole vault.

The meet concluded yesterday.

STORM 16 RACERS 4

An unbelievable night for softball is the only way to describe the last match-up between the Majors Storm and the Majors Racers.

It was the third inning and the Racers had runners on second and third.  The next batter hit a line drive to DD Madigan at shortstop.  The runner on second was 3/4 of the way to third and the runner on third had already left for home. In the middle of all of the “encouraging” yells from the Storm dugout Alex Bredy at third base had the presence of mind to cover the base, DD tossed her the ball and she proceeded to tag both runners out for a triple play!  Roxanne Edenholm came in to close the game in the fourth inning and the Storm walked away with a 16-4 victory and a page in the BILL history books!

CUBS 11 DODGERS 9

It was an unusually dry evening at Hidden Cove, and the Dodgers came out swinging to go ahead 2-0 in the first inning thanks to a double by Ian Allen. The Cubs were equally impressive with big hits by Brock Jennings, Thomas Crowley, Levi Barlet, and Aaron Jumpa.

Great defensive plays of the night were Brock Jennings making a tough catch at right field and Dodger Eric Nibarger fielding a tricky ground ball at third base to get the out. Carter Daniels and Murphy Sullivan had big hits when the Dodgers needed them. Kyler Cyr of the Cubs was tough behind the plate, but the Dodgers kept it close for five exciting innings!
