GIRLS LACROSSE</b

BHS opens with 17-1 win

The BHS girls lacrosse team had little trouble with Seattle Prep in Monday’s season opener at Magnuson Park in Seattle, knocking off the Panthers 17-1.

Mariah Walk led the Spartan offense with five goals and one assist. Sally Baumgartner and Sydney Whitaker each had three goals and two assists, with Kelsey Mackin and Jaclyn Biggers both adding two goals. Liana Olson and Sarah Shea each tallied once to round out the Sparts’ scoring.

Bainbridge outshot Prep 28-9, with goalie Jo Wallace turning away all but one of the Panthers’ efforts.

“Our team played a poised and focused game,” said coach Tami Tommila. “All 16 players got in the game, and we were able to work on a lot of plays in the second half.

“Seattle Prep is a young team, but a new coach is there this year, and she seems to have brought in a positive culture to the program. I was impressed with their attitude and effort on the field.”

The team hosted the Tacoma Tigers last night in its home opener, with the next home game at 6:15 next Wednesday against Snohomish.

BHS SOFTBALL

Spartans to play 6 games in 9 days

The BHS softball team opened the season with a 5-1 victory at Central Kitsap on Wednesday. Caitlin McCormick paced the Spartan attack with three hits and three RBIs, while Lindsay Willman threw a four-hitter and struck out nine.

“Overall, we played a good game,” said coach Liz McCloskey. “The girls were especially anxious because a lot of them know each other from the different leagues they play in. It gave us a lot of the confidence we need for the rest of the season.”

Bainbridge scored a run in the first. Brittany Wisner hit into a fielder’s choice, then with two outs Willman advanced her to third on a single. McCormick followed with another single to plate Wisner.

The Spartans exploded for four runs in the fifth. Clara Dunn and Wisner led off the inning with singles, and Willman reached on an error to load the bases. McCormick’s double drove in Dunn and Wisner. Taylor Greenfield’s groundout scored pinchrunner Camille Moore. Hayley Willman followed with a single to score McCormick.

The Cougars scored their lone run in the bottom half of the frame on a home run.

Hayley Willman, Dunn and Lindsay Willman all had two hits, as the Spartans outhit CK 11-4.

“The younger kids stepped up, both in the field and at the plate,” McCloskey said. “Hayley had a great game at second in her first game.”

Weather permitting, the Spartans open a nine-day stretch today in which they are scheduled to play six games: Today at Rainier Beach; Cleveland here on Monday; Tuesday at Franklin; Wednesday’s Metro League opener at Eastside Catholic; home Friday against Eastside Catholic; Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls Saturday at BHS.

To deal with such a taxing schedule, McCloskey anticipates using all three of her pitchers: Lindsay Willman, Hailey Willman and Lauren Reichert.

BHS TENNIS

Netters shut out Eastside Catholic

The BHS tennis team got off to a good start in the Metro League season with an 11-0 defeat of visiting Eastside Catholic. The Spartan netters didn’t lose a single set as the Crusaders won just 21 games in the 11 matches.

The team’s next home match is Wednesday, April 8 against Nathan Hale.
