A Bainbridge Island man wanted on three warrants was arrested at gunpoint outside a popular downtown coffee shop Tuesday afternoon in downtown Winslow.

Police said Adam Carter, 29, was taken into custody following a daylong chase.

Bainbridge Island Police Chief Jon Fehlman said officers had sighted Carter earlier in the day at the Pavillion on North Madison Avenue, but he slipped away.

“They chased him through some alleys and lost him,” Fehlman said.

Carter was later seen near Bjune Drive SE, and three officers with guns drawn stopped the man in front of Roosters Cafe just before 2 p.m.

About a half dozen customers were inside the coffeehouse at the time.

“They got coffee and a show,” said a barista at Roosters.

Fehlman said Carter went without a struggle.

“He gave up. He didn’t want to run anymore,” Fehlman said.

Carter was wanted on a warrant from the state Department of Corrections, which had him classified as an escapee after failing to meet the terms of his release, and also a $25,000 warrant from the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

Carter was taken after his arrest to Kitsap County Jail.

Fehlman said an officer called him shortly after the arrest and warned him that he would probably be hearing from people who saw the dramatic arrest.

“‘Your phone should be ringing off the hook,'” Fehlman recalled.

That’s nothing, Fehlman told the officer, because two reporters were waiting in the hallway at the police station to talk to him about the incident.
