Jacob Goodman scores three times in thriller.

The Bainbridge boys’ lacrosse team had some shaky moments, but ultimately came out on top over the Bellevue Wolverines with a 7-6 win Friday night at Memorial High School.

The win keeps Bainbridge undefeated on the year. It’s also payback for last year’s state playoff semifinal loss to the defending state champions.

Bellevue scored twice in the first quarter as the Bainbridge defense was off a step to start. Jacob Goodman got the Spartans on the board at the 3:36 mark. Jacob Knostman tied the game a few minutes later after Alex Rabin missed an open net after forcing a turnover on Bellevue goalkeeper Austin Boyd.

Riley Gulrajani scored to give Bellevue the lead, but Alex Crane made a great low line drive shot to tie the game back up. Goodman made the play of the game when he forced Boyd into a turnover on a failure to clear, then scored from 40 yards out off the quick restart as Boyd had not gotten back to the cage in time. It gave the Spartans a 4-3 lead going into halftime.

“It was a heads-up play, I guess,” Goodman said. “I just knew I had to start going as soon as he (the ref) blew the whistle so I just launched it into the goal.”

Cameron Parker, Crane and Goodman scored in the third quarter to give Bainbridge the lead, but Andrew Gulrajani, Eric Haehl and Hank Bethke scored between the third and the fourth to keep things tight.

Both sides traded possession after Bethke’s goal late in the fourth, but Nick Lacy forced a critical turnover on a Bellevue possession to keep Bainbridge on top.

“In the (last) timeout our coaches said play smart – we had to just not get beat and don’t let them get a play,” Lacy said. “That kid wanted to take me and I got the better of him.”

Head coach Jack Visco praised his team’s mental toughness in crunch time.

“That team is a well-coached team,” he said. “They came to play but our kids stayed with it.”

Bainbridge (10-0) hosts Curtis Tuesday.
