Student stabbed at high school

A 12th-grade student was stabbed at Bainbridge High School Monday afternoon.

School officials said an eighth-grade student from Woodward Middle School stabbed the 17-year-old high school senior in the shoulder with a small folding knife at about 3:25 p.m. in the “wagon wheel” area between school buildings.

The incident occurred when the student, 14, entered the high school campus and began arguing with a group of high school students, according to a police press release.

According to witness reports, the suspect swung his knife at a second high school student during the incident, but did not make contact.

The second victim told the suspect to put his knife down, which he did. The second victim tackled the suspect, but he was able to break free and escape, the release said.

A school administrator was alerted by students, and called 9-1-1. By the time the administrator arrived at the scene, the Woodward student had left. The administrator did not see the weapon, said Pamela Keyes, spokeswoman for the Bainbridge Island School District.

Police found the suspect within a half block of the school, Keyes said.

The suspect was taken to the Kitsap County Juvenile Detention Center. He was charged with one count of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and one count of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, according to the police release.

Bainbridge police said the victim’s wound was assessed by the school nurse and treated with a butterfly stitch. The victim was later treated at Virginia Mason Winslow and received four stitches, police said.
