The Bainbridge Island City Council will decide whether to approve temporary marijuana regulations at this week’s session.

The city will conduct the second reading and public hearing on pending marijuana regulations Monday evening.

Washington voters approved Initiative 502 in the 2012 election, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana under state law.

Bainbridge Island has since been working to keep up to date with regulations set forward by the state Liquor Control Board to adopt regulations as soon as late December.

During the reading and hearing, the council will also discuss the extent of rigidity they hope to implement into the regulations and its immediate effective date.

If approved, the proposed temporary ordinance will establish a six-month moratorium on grow operations and rules on marijuana retail, processing and collective gardens.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the city council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25.

Planning Director Kathy Cook will open the discussion at 7:20 p.m.

Those interested in giving public comment but who are unable to attend are encouraged to submit comments prior to the meeting date. The city clerk will accept hand-delivered, mailed or emailed comments at cityclerk@bainbridgewa.gov.
