To the editor:

How ashamed we are of that the leading Catholic Church on the island, St Cecilia’s, could not stand up against offering its parish the Referendum 74 petition. So many Catholic pastors in the Seattle area did stand up with a full understanding of the inappropriateness of the church weighing in on a civil rights issue, and one of love, celebration and commitment between two people. As community members, we should be able to expect more understanding, compassion and leadership from you.

When we called the church office to voice our concern we were told that every citizen has a right to vote on this issue. They certainly do, but the Catholic Church has no business using its power to bring this matter to a vote.

Please know that we will share with everyone we know your unfortunate decision and will encourage them to be circumspect with every action of St. Cecilia’s, since you seem unable to make the courageous human choice.
