To the editor:
I remember clearly my first day of kindergarten at Blakely. At the bus stop, my mom tied a circular name tag onto my coat. I privately wondered how I would ever get home at the end of the day!
In addition to my fantastic bus driver (Thor), I remember well each teacher with whom I studied: kindergarten (Mrs. Inch), first (Mrs. Byers), second (Mrs. Mirkovich), third (Mr. Colley), fourth (Mr. Axling) and fifth (Ms. Howgate). Each one was smart, caring, encouraging, and consistent. They set me up perfectly for lifelong learning and growth.
I remember my middle and high school teachers, too, but won’t list them here for brevity. I will only say they were outstanding.
The Bainbridge schools prepared me to study with prestigious scholars in top universities; build a professional career I love; and teach emerging leaders at the University of Washington. After 25 years away from the rock, I brought my family to Bainbridge – on purpose – for this unique community and its schools. Our two daughters thrive every single day, with stellar teachers and staff guiding them graciously.
The Bainbridge schools are excellent. They deserve our faithful support. Children’s futures are brighter here (and, in turn, so are our property values – if you want the business case).
Please join me in voting “Yes!” in the two school levies on Feb. 11. It is a small action to take to ensure a large and positive return.
