Healthcare, a mock election and island housing will be the topics at the VillageSpeak meetings this fall.
A panel discussion is planned Monday, Sept. 24 on “The Island’s Healthcare Wishlist: Planning for the Future.”
Five local medical leaders will discuss successes they’ve seen on the island and their hopes for the island’s health services future. Babies, emergencies, long-term diseases, special needs, catastrophic disasters. Are we focused, are we ready?
A moderated audience question-and-answer session will be followed by a standing reception with food to continue the dialogue with the panelists.
Chapple Langemack, adult programming coordinator for the Kitsap Regional Library, will
open the meeting with a reading from “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot, a story about a poor Southern tobacco farmer whose cells were used without her knowledge to develop important medicines to fight disease.
The event will be held at St. Barnabas Parish Hall, 1187 Wyatt Way NW.
A hands-on, mock election debate will be held Thursday, Oct. 25 at Bainbridge Island Brewing.
Debate-expert Clarence Moriwaki will present an issue and then will divide the audience between leaders who will organize their team members for short, persuasive speeches, delivered soapbox-style. The audience will then vote on best debate leader, most persuasive team, and the winning point of view.
Organizers expect attendees will learn new persuasive techniques and enjoy an evening filled with camaraderie and team games.
On Monday, Nov. 19, the topic is “Does Housing Diversity Matter?”
Mansions, prefabs and shipping crates? In my neighborhood, you say? Come share housing insights, consider implications and discuss alternatives for managing Bainbridge Island’s housing assets. The discussion will be held in the OfficeXpats Conference Center in the Bainbridge Pavilion, 403 Madison Ave.
All VillageSpeak events begin at 6:30 for gnoshes and socializing, with the program starting at 7 p.m.
A standing reception follows the program at 8:30 p.m.
