Bainbridge council OKs name change for memorial

The Bainbridge Island City Council voted to officially change the name of the Japanese American memorial at Pritchard Park during this week’s meeting.

The Bainbridge Island City Council voted to officially change the name of the Japanese American memorial at Pritchard Park during this week’s meeting.

The resolution incorporates the word “exclusion” and now dubs the monument the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial.

In the initial enabling legislation in 2008 the word was not included.

It was subsequently left out of the National Park Service’s official material for the site.

The resolution adopted by the council Monday explained, “It is the desire of the (Bainbridge Island Japanese American) Association, of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community, and of the survivors of the exclusion of members of our community during World War II that the Memorial name expressly acknowledge the exclusion experience.”

Now that the name is officially changed at the local and county level, the National Park Service will update its material to match.
