Girls’ basketball

The Bainbridge girls’ basketball team saw its season end Feb. 12 with a 59-39 loss to rival Mercer Island in a first-round 3A Sea-King District 2 game at Bainbridge High School.

The Spartans were down 30-12 at halftime, then played even with Mercer during the second half – but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Grace Kenyon led the team effort with 14 points and seven rebounds. Hannah Depew had eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Bainbridge lost to Lakeside 46-33 on Feb. 10 in a Metro League tournament game that denied the Spartans a chance at a first-round bye.

The Spartans were down by just two going into the fourth quarter but were held to only two points in the final period.

Kenyon scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Depew scored 10 points, while Wesley Nottingham had eight points and six rebounds.

Bainbridge loses just three seniors in Morgan Moniz, Micki Johns and Davi Gonzales. They finished with a record of 14-9.

Club Gymnastics

The Bainbridge Island Rec Optional team had several tumblers earn ribbons Jan. 29-30 at the Winter Magic Rec-Op 2011 meet at the Seattle Gymnastics Academy.

In the Level AD Senior Division, Laura Hilst took fifth in the all-around and placed first on the beam with a score of 9.55.

Grace Allen took sixth in the all-around, while Megan Duncan placed seventh.

Cyclocross

Zach McDonald placed in the top 25 Jan. 29-30 at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in St. Wendel, Germany.

McDonald, a 2009 BHS graduate and a student at the University of Washington, was in the top 15 for the early part of the U23 men’s race. He eventually took 23rd. He finished 28th in the competition a year ago.

McDonald earned his spot on the U.S. National team thanks to winning his second straight D-I national title and taking second in the U23 race at the 2010 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships.

It is the fourth time he has been named to the U.S. National team.

Swimming

Olaf Olson collected another Swimmer of the Week award from the Patriot League for his performance at back-to-back meets against Columbia and Princeton.

Olson, a 2007 BHS graduate, took first in the one-meter and three-meter springboard events in both meets. It is the first time this season he has swept both events and the first time he has done so in back-to-back meets.

Olson’s performance helped the Mids defeat Princeton on the road for the first time since 1963, and it was the first home loss for the Tigers in the 20-year history of its pool.

Olson followed the performance up with a win in the three-meter springboard against Drexel on Feb. 11.

Olson is undefeated in the three-meter springboard with a record of 13-0.

Up next is the Patriot League Championships, which run through this weekend.

Special Olympics

The Bainbridge Island Golden Eagles are currently taking applications for its spring season.

The team takes in athletes from Bainbridge and North Kitsap, and all athletes from ages 8 and up are encouraged to turn out. The Golden Eagles participate in bowling, basketball and track and field.

Rec softball

The Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District is taking over the Bainbridge Island Adult Softball Leagues as league manager.

The district will oversee team and player registration, game scheduling and field maintenance. It is also proposing leagues for men, women, co-ed on weeknights and co-ed on Sundays.

The district is holding a meeting at 7 p.m. Feb 22 at Strawberry Hill Center to discuss its new role in overseeing the league, an adult softball council, rules, umpires and more.
