A 21-year-old Bainbridge Island man was charged with felony vehicular assault Monday in Kitsap County District Court after police claim he totaled his Ford Explorer near NE Koura Road early Sunday in a crash that left his girlfriend, a passenger in the SUV, with a possible concussion.
Police said both Christopher John Rose and his passenger were hurt in the accident, which happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 30 near Fieldstone Lane NE. The passenger suffered a head injury and was taken Harrison Medical Center. Rose received cuts on his head and his hip in the accident.
According to court papers, Rose was driving his Ford Explorer went it went into a ditch on the south side of the Koura Road and then dropped 200 feet. The SUV took out a mailbox and then flew into a berm.
Police said Rose allegedly admitted to drinking beer several hours before the crash, and witnesses noted he showed signs of impairment and smelled of alcohol.
Authorities said he became belligerent with the medic crew and a Bainbridge officer, and also didn’t recognize one of the firefighters as an old friend from school.
Rose was initially hospitalized after the accident and then booked into Kitsap County Jail Sunday afternoon for vehicular assault.
Bail was set at $50,000.
Conviction of vehicular assault can result in a maximum 10-year prison sentence and $20,000 fine.
