For many, 2010 was a hard year, filled with stress from the economic recession and exhausting challenges.

Yet there were many in the community who continued to contribute to a long-standing tradition of service to their fellow islanders and the greater community, despite rough waters.

Below are just a few of the highlights from 2010.

In late January Bainbridge Island Land Trust honored Paul and Debbi Brainerd, founders of IslandWood, with the Phyllis Young Award for their lifetime of service and commitment to environmental protection and education. The couple have each contributed efforts to preserving wildlife and the environment through numerous organizations.

In March, the Rolling Bay Post Office Building was named after John “Bud” Hawk, who grew up near Rolling Bay and received a Medal of Honor during World War II. He was honored by President Harry Truman in 1945 at the State Capitol in Olympia.

The Japanese American Memorial Wall was dedicated in April, on the 68th anniversary of the first day islanders were interned during World War II. The memorial wall is in Pritchard Park.

Farmer Akio Suyematsu, 88, was honored in May by Friends of the Farm for his lifetime contributions to agriculture. Suymetasu still works daily on his island farm and serves as a symbol of work ethic and agricultural discipline.
