Police Blotter
Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:
OCTOBER 20
7:51 a.m. A window in a door at the municipal court building was found shattered. The window was double-paned and entry to the building had not been gained. No rocks or hard objects were found in the vicinity of the door. A white, chalky substance was found on the window. The pattern of the cracks were consistent with a small projectile, possibly fired from a slingshot or air rifle. Damage was estimated at $255. No suspects.
9:04 a.m. A Phelps Road resident reported that someone may have entered her house and tampered with her computer while she was away for the weekend. She had left the house locked on Friday, but a neighbor told her he had noticed her front door wide open Saturday morning. The resident had returned home Monday to find her rear door unlocked, and all the cables to her laptop computer disconnected. No property was missing and and the computer was undamaged. No suspects.
10:44 a.m. An air compressor and a reciprocating saw were discovered missing from a construction trailer on Yeomalt Point Drive. A carpenter arrived at the site to find its padlock missing. No other tools had been taken. The trailer was used by several contractors and at least five people knew the lock’s combination. No suspects.
10:46 a.m. A Rockaway Beach Road resident turned in a VHS camcorder found inside a gray hard case left on the street next to his recycling bin. The camera was booked as found property.
10:50 a.m. A vehicle parked illegally in the police station parking lot was impounded. Mixed fluids found on the ground around the vehicle, suggesting it had engine problems. Kitsap Towing hauled the vehicle to Poulsbo.
2:50 p.m. A blue sign with neon green letters that read “Hiring Dealers” was found in the bushes by a gym on Madison Avenue. Police contacted the Clearwater Casino but were informed the sign did not belong to it. The sign was placed in storage for safekeeping.
4:42 p.m. A vehicle was stopped for speeding after an officer observed it traveling 45 mph in a 25 mph zone on Hidden Cove Road. The driver’s license was also found to be suspended and he was cited.
OCTOBER 21
8:30 a.m. A resident reported the theft of 22 political signs from roadsides around the island. The signs included endorsements of Republicans running for local offices, as well as repudiations of various local taxes. The resident said that signs endorsing Democratic candidates had not been disturbed. The missing signs were valued at $850. No suspects.
10:55 a.m. A dump truck loaded with dirt was stopped on SR-305 north south of Day Road after a records check showed its registration had been canceled for a “dishonored check.” The officer had seen the truck driver talking on his cell phone while driving earlier in the day. Further inspection revealed that the truck had a defective taillight and that one of its dual tires had severely worn tread. The officer told the driver he would be written up for the cancelled registration and warned regarding the cell phone, taillight and tire.
11:06 a.m. Tire tracks from a large truck were found running over a recently landscaped berm on Alder Avenue. A resident told police that he believed a large commercial vehicle had driven over the berm, traveled about 10 feet toward the road end, then backed up over the berm. The berm was planted with ornamental grasses. Damage was estimated at $100. An officer advised the resident that the tracks were likely left by a four-wheel drive vehicle, rather than a commercial truck. No suspects.
12:06 p.m. Police responded to Bainbridge High School where a male student had reportedly fled into the woods after he was confronted by an employee about smoking marijuana on school grounds. The student was also suspected of selling marijuana on campus. Responding officers could hear someone crashing through the woods between the school and the district bus barn. After a short search an officer found the suspect curled in a ball in the woods. The officer ordered the student to stand up and show his hands. Unsure of how soon backup would arrive, the officer drew his taser and aimed it at the ground but did not turn it on. “Why do you have a gun?” the student asked. “Are you going to shoot me?” The student refused to show his hands and the officer saw a metallic object in one of his hands. He told the student he would shoot him with a taser if he did not follow orders. The student stuffed the object in his pocket and said it was his cell phone. A second officer arrived and the student was walked from the woods for a further search. The student told officers that he had been smoking a cigarette, not marijuana, earlier, and had run from security because he didn’t want to be hassled. The student consented to a search. Officers found several small pieces of burnt marijuana in the backpack, which also smelled of marijuana. The student accused the officers of planting the marijuana and agressively demanded to see it. He was arrested and briefly struggled with officers as he was handcuffed. The student was transported to jail and his possessions were checked in to evidence.
12:32 p.m. Fire and police responded to Bainbridge High School where a student had apparently overdosed on a prescription medication. The student was given first aid on the scene before being transported to a hospital for further care.
11:41 p.m. A vehicle was stopped for speeding on Miller Road after an officer observed it travelling at 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver produced a license that was found to be suspended. The car’s registered owner, sitting in the back seat, had a valid license. The driver was cited. The owner was allowed to switch places with the driver and drive the car away.
3:26 p.m. An officer observed a vehicle speeding on Miller Road make an illegal pass in a no-passing zone. The vehicle was stopped and its driver, a Seattle man, was contacted. He smelled of intoxicants and was slurring his words. The man agreed to field sobriety tests. When asked to recite the alphabet, he repeated letters as far as “G,” then stopped. The officer asked him if there was more, and he continued, forgetting “J” and “K” but inserting a bonus “Q.” Following further field tests and a breath test at the station, the man was booked into jail for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and for failure to use a required ignition interlock.
6:42 p.m. A green-and-white, Scott, BMX-style bicycle was reported stolen from the soccer fields at Woodward Middle School. The bicycle had been left unsecured and disappeared sometime between 4:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. A bag on the bicycle contained the student’s cell phone. The bicycle and phone together were valued at $650. An officer searched the area extensively with no success. The items were reported as stolen property.
OCTOBER 22
12:54 a.m. A vehicle was stopped on Seabold Road for a defective taillight. As the car pulled over, the officer noticed that its brake lights were also defective. The driver, a Suquamish woman, said she had bought the car a week before and had been having trouble with the lights. After some fiddling, she was able to get the taillight to come on but the brake lights remained dead. A records check showed the woman’s license was suspended and she was unable to produce proof of insurance. She was cited.
5:17 a.m. A license plate was found by the door of the police station. A records check showed that the plate was registered to a vehicle on Bainbridge, but had been canceled. It was placed in storage to be destroyed.
10:35 a.m. A Ford van hit a deer while traveling southbound on SR-305 near Adas Will Road. The deer fled east and dissapeared following the accident. The van’s front end sustained damage. The driver, a Federal Way man, said the deer had jumped in front of the vehicle and he hadn’t had time to stop.
12:21 p.m. A tool shed at a Sportsman Club Road construction site was found burglarized. Suspects had apparently pried back a security bar over a window to gain entry and had departed via the shed’s door, damaging the metal door guard. A weed trimmer, nail gun and grinder were missing. No suspects.
7:57 p.m. Several electronic devices were reported stolen from an unlocked residence on Miller Road. An iPod, laptop and digital camera totaling $1,220 were reported missing. The resident suspected that persons he knew from a nearby residence had taken the items to sell for drug money.
