A two-vehicle collision hit close to home for Bainbridge firefighters Thursday — right in front of their headquarters station on Madison Avenue.

The accident occurred at 4:19 p.m. March 7, and the two drivers in the crash were taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment.

Bainbridge police said the crash occurred after a Suquamish woman in her early 60s was driving on Madison Avenue in a 2012 Toyota Scion toward Highway 305 when she crossed the centerline and struck and a 2006 Ford Ranger driven by a Poulsbo man in his late 40s.

Bainbridge Police Officer Ben Sias said a driver who was following the woman in the Scion had just called 911 to report her as a reckless driver.

The caller was still on the phone when the crash happened seconds later.

A DUI investigation is underway, Sias said.

Emergency responders quickly responded to the accident scene, which partially blocked the entryway to the fire station bays. No one inside heard the crash, an assistant chief said.

Madison Avenue was closed to traffic after the crash, and prompted heavy traffic on High School Road.

The roadway was opened to a single lane of traffic after the arrival of a tow truck, and the road completely reopened at about 5:15 p.m.
